White Collar Crimes

"White Collar Crimes" is a category of criminal activities for which the law provides a penalty. Those activities have commonalties, namely that they are non-violent in nature, and usually involve deception or concealment of facts, physical data, or knowledge in an effort to obtain property (such as real estate) or services (such as medical care).

Although nonviolent in nature, white collar crimes are punished for the potential or actual harm that they cause to another person, group, or company.

Once held as being the crime of social elite and corporate executives, white collar criminal charges are brought against all social groups today, including executives, managers, tellers, blue-collar workers, publicly held corporations, and small privately held companies.

White collar crimes include several other crimes some of which are listed below. You can click on those links or the links to the left for more information about each crime.

Successful White Collar Criminal Defense

Van Wagner & Wood's attorneys are very experienced in white collar crime defense and have handled numerous white collar crime cases including very complex RICO (racketeering), embezzlement and fraud cases. The majority of those cases have involved large sums of money, and in some instances allege that those sums were taken by complex scams and conspiracies.

Recently, Good Morning America invited Attorney Chris Van Wagner as a guest criminal law commentator to comment on the merits of a white collar crime case being prosecuted in Eau Claire, Wisconsin (Eau County Circuit Court).

In one of the largest theft cases ever tried in the state of Wisconsin, Attorney Tracey Wood won an outright acquittal for her client when 7 others were convicted and sentenced to very long prison terms. Attorney Wood has successfully argued wrongful sentencing cases that were tried by other attorneys and obtained probation for that client so that she could go home to her children, rather than remain in prison serving the unjust sentencing punishment that had been imposed upon her at her trial.

Attorney Chris Van Wagner has handled numerous cases involving embezzlement - the taking of money or property that is already in the possession of the one by whom it is taken. Under the laws of the state of Wisconsin, embezzlement, which is a hybrid theft charge because of the possessorary nature of the crime, is heavily prosecuted, as well as the largest RICO case ever tried in this state, and several cases for fraud, larceny, and false pretenses.

When the prosecution takes a strong stance on an issue, such as charitable donation scams, the efforts involved in prosecuting the defendant are intense, and it often might appear to those watching the procedures that the prosecutor is "out to get his man", so to speak, more than he is committed to finding "truth and justice".

So, when you are facing complex white collar criminal charges, and the walls seem to be caving in around you, it may help to know that the long successful trial and acquittal record of the criminal defense lawyers at Van Wagner & Wood, Attorney Chris Van Wagner & Attorney Tracey Wood, evidences a record of two attorneys who stand above the crowd.

If you are under investigation for a white collar crime, if you have been arrested for a white collar crime, or if you have been convicted and believe the conviction was wrong or the sentence was unduly harsh, call (608-284-1200) or e-mail the attorneys at Van Wagner & Wood right away.
